Statutory declarations of private interests
Certain elected city officials and officeholders must submit a declaration of private interests to the Audit Committee.
According to Section 84 of the Local Government Act, they must submit a declaration of private interests concerning their managerial duties and positions of trust in enterprises engaged in business activities and in other corporate entities, about their significant assets and about other private interests that could be of significance in attending a position in public posts.
The policy is that the persons who are obliged to declare are themselves responsible for submitting the declaration and keeping the information up to date. The Audit Department sends instructions for making the declaration to such persons by email. They will also receive two email reminders annually to keep the information up-to-date.
The Audit Committee monitors compliance with the obligation to declare and forwards the declarations to the council for information at least twice a year. The Audit Committee may, in its supervisory capacity, urge persons who are obliged to declare to submit a new declaration or to augment the information in a declaration already made. The procedure to augment the information may be initiated if the Audit Committee becomes aware of interests that have not been declared.
The information will be published on the City’s website (in Finnish) unless the provisions on secrecy require otherwise.
